Got the Gift of Gab? Or Just Talking in Circles?

Writer: Aleksandra NinovicAleksandra Ninovic

Ever met someone who could talk the hind legs off a donkey? We're all different when it comes to how much we chatter, and that variety is what makes conversations so interesting—or sometimes so exhausting.

Picture this: You're at a party, and there's that one person who's the life of the event, talking non-stop. Let’s call him Chatty Charlie. Charlie’s got stories, jokes, and opinions on everything under the sun. Then there's Quiet Quinn, who prefers to observe and only chimes in with a few well-chosen words. We might say Charlie is a chatterbox, while Quinn is a man of few words.

Now, imagine you're trying to get to the bottom of a story Charlie’s telling. Instead of getting straight to the point, he keeps going on and on about unrelated details—he’s talking in circles. When someone does this deliberately, it’s known as beating around the bush. Maybe Charlie’s avoiding your question about where he got that dubious-looking tattoo. Instead of giving you a direct answer, he starts recounting his entire last vacation. You might be tempted to say, “Charlie, cut to the chase!” before he talks your ear off.

But not all talkers are created equal. Enter Smooth Sarah. Sarah’s got the gift of gab. She can make you believe anything, effortlessly spinning words into gold. If she’s a politician, she’ll have your vote by the end of her speech. However, be careful. Not all silver-tongued speakers have your best interests at heart. Sarah might just be a smooth talker, showering you with compliments to get something she wants. She’s the type who could talk a dog off a meat truck—imagine convincing a dog to abandon a truck full of juicy steaks!

So next time you're at a party, in a meeting, or just chatting with friends, keep an ear out. Are you hearing some smooth talk, or is it just another case of beating around the bush?

And if you find yourself doing more listening than talking, remember, sometimes it’s the quiet ones who have the most interesting things to say—when they finally do speak up.
