Play It By Ear with These Musical Phrases

Writer: Aleksandra NinovicAleksandra Ninovic

The American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow once said that music is the "universal language" of all people. And honey, that might just be the truest thing anyone’s ever said. Think about it: We’ve got a symphony of English expressions that riff on music to jazz up our everyday lives. Let’s break it down.

Imagine this: You’ve just aced your big presentation at work. Your boss walks over, gives you a thumbs up, and says, “Excellent job!” That’s right, those words are music to your ears. It’s not that your boss is a secret pop star (though wouldn’t that be something?), but what they said hits all the right notes and makes you want to do a little happy dance.

But life’s not always a walk in the park, is it? Sometimes, you’ve got to face the music. Let’s say you threw a party while your parents were out of town, and the neighbors weren’t exactly thrilled with the late-night karaoke session. When your folks get home and see the noise complaint from Mr. Johnson next door, you’re going to have to face the music. Brace yourself, because that tune is all about owning up to your not-so-harmonious actions.

Speaking of changing things up, have you ever had to change your tune? Picture this: You’re all set to skip that family reunion because you think it’s going to be a snooze-fest. Then, you find out your cool cousin from California is flying in. Suddenly, you’re all “Hey, maybe this won’t be so bad after all!” That, my friend, is a classic case of changing your tune. It’s like going from a sad ballad to an upbeat pop song because you’ve had a change of heart.

Now, let’s talk about going with the flow, or as we like to say, playing it by ear. Maybe you’ve got a friend visiting from out of town, but you’re both juggling busy schedules. Instead of planning every single detail, you say, “Let’s just play it by ear.” You’re basically saying, “We’ll see how it goes and improvise.” It’s the perfect way to keep things flexible and fun, much like a jazz musician riffing on stage.

So there you have it, a medley of musical phrases that make our everyday conversations a bit more melodious. Next time you’re navigating through life’s symphony, remember these gems and keep the beat. 🎵
